The Details

The Land

We already have purchased the land to build the school on in Tamale. The city has a population of about 361,000 and is growing rapidly, partly due to its central location in the northern region. This makes it an ideal place to build the school due to its accessibility for rural children and the need for more educational infrastructure as the area develops.

One of the basic issues that interferes with children attending school is that in Africa, if a child does not have an appropriate uniform, they cannot go to school. If their uniform is torn or too worn, they will not be able to attend. By teaching the students to sew, it serves the additional purpose of preventing drop-outs and class avoidance.

Sustainability and Sense of Ownership

One way we plan to enable the children to help themselves and build support for the school is to sell products that the older students have made in class. For example, we can connect basket and blanket weaving lessons with the local resources and lessons in business. Of note are the fair trade organic cotton, which is grown and hand-spun in the area. The school would provide the space and resources for the students who would want to create hand crafts to expand their skills and get connected to local and international markets. These products could be sold in America to generate support and funds to help support their education and community. This would help the children feel more ownership and connection between their classes and the real-world application of their lessons. This can motivate students to continue learning and engaging with the school and community and feel pride in their work and contribution.

We hope to also provide job opportunities and to connect graduating students with jobs in local businesses or return to the school as teachers.

Ways You Can Help: Donate Funds and Supplies

We have started collecting sewing machines as well as bikes for the children to use to travel to and from school and can always use more.

We need to purchase building materials and water. We accept donations of sewing machines, vehicles for transporting loads of water and supplies, children’s bikes, and school supplies as well as funds to pay the local construction workers and teachers. Any help is greatly appreciated, though funds do tend to go the furthest since we can buy materials in Ghana to save on shipping.

We also happily accept vehicle donations, as the resale price goes directly to funding the school.
